Why are control joints cut into the driveway?
We recommend the introduction of control joints, to allow the expansion and contraction which naturally occurs in Concrete during temperature change, the control joints absorb this movement and help to prevent the driveway from cracking. if you require no control joints some customers do please indicate before hand.
Every Control Joint is placed at what we deem to be the weakest points in the Concrete Slab we cannot be 100% accurate that they will stop the cracking, so therefore we do not guarantee against hairline or any other cracks, Concrete will crack on right angles so we will always place them at these points, and we will cut them in every 4 x 4 or 3 x 3 sqm, Depending on the size of the slab. They will then be filled with Mastic prior to sealing.
We do not get any guarantee from the concrete companies we use that the concrete used to their specifications will not crack.
Yes control joints are slightly unsightly but they are placed there for a purpose to control the cracking of the slab as it dries and shrinks.Back to top
